Chestatee Wildlife Preserve

There's no need to travel to other continents for safari-like adventure when lions, tigers, bears, leopards and chimpanzees can be found just north of GA 400!  The Chestatee Wildlife Preserve in Dahlonega cares for more than 450 animals native to the Americas, Africa, Australia and Asia.  Nestled on 25 acres of what was farmland, Chestatee has an unhurried atmosphere. The preserve is a nonprofit organization and relies on donation and admission fees to fund its operations.

"We have about 14 babies on the bottle now," said Chestatee founder C.W. Wathen (top left, with two White Siberian Tiger cubs). The other babies are eight big cats, three bear cubs, a deer, an owl and one skunk. Kim Hunter (pictured at right with cougar and leopard cubs) is a volunteer and works primarily with the big cats.
